Excel our Girls

The Excel Our Girls project is a hands-on training programme for talented undergraduate and graduate girls between ages 20 and 25.

The objective of the project is to train girls to build data-driven solutions using Microsoft Excel and other programming languages (Python, R, Power BI, Power Apps etc.). Each cohort will specialize in a special programming language and use this to build data-driven solutions.

The programme seeks to bridge this skills gap by providing sponsored training for up to 1,000 girls every year in Data Analytics.

In our maiden edition, which was launched in August 2021, 199 girls applied for the programme. Out of this number, 22 were selected to participate in the 14-week programme.

Data Analytics Skills Gap

Data Analytics has become one of the most sought-after skills in every industry. Organizations need employees, who can analyse data to give them meaningful insights on business performance.

With this insight, leading schools across the world are proactively equipping their students with these skillsets. However, in Ghana, there is still a huge divide between the level of proficiency organizations require and the training our students are getting in this area.

Currently, no public university in Ghana offers hands-on training in Data Analytics. To add to this only 18% of today’s data science roles are occupied by females, and 11% of data teams don’t have any women on them at all according to a recent Harnham report.

Experts, believe that more gender diversity, particularly in the field of data science, can translate to more significant innovation, increased productivity, and better decision making.
